EDUCATION

INITIATIVE

COLE JAZZ upholds that knowledge is universal.

We aim to share Jack Cole's story with the greater dance community and make his historic technique accessible to artists across the globe. As a part of our education initiative, we develop and participate in training programs in London, Tokyo, Mexico, California, and Maine, lead regular community workshops in New York City, and train dancers at the collegiate and high school level. The Cole Technique is currently offered at Steps on Broadway as a drop-in class, as well as a regular technique class in the Steps Conservatory and Academy programs. The Cole Technique has been offered at Broadway Dance Center (NYC and Tokyo locations) and Peridance Center. COLE JAZZ also runs masterclasses at NYU Tisch School of Dance, Pace University Sands College of Performing Arts (Commercial Dance), Thornton Academy Arts, Uprooted, The Source, MOMEN NYC, and House of Jazz London.

We believe that training both current and future generations of artists in the Cole method is the most important aspect of passing on Cole’s legacy. The more people and perspectives that engage with this work, the more the technique itself evolves, a truly unique aspect of this particular training method and something we welcome at COLE JAZZ. We remain students of the work, just as Cole would have done, deepening our approach by remaining curious about the body's experience, allowing exploration within the technique, and conducting ongoing research in the cultures that influenced Jack Cole.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

COLE JAZZ aims to make this training accessible to the community by offering affordable workshops that expose artists to the full spectrum of this artform. For these 1-2 day intensive training programs we offer numerous cultural and Jazz-based styles, which have included African Technique, Bharatanatyam, Bollywood, Popping, Body Percussion, Commercial Jazz, Theater Jazz, Jazz Fusion, and more. Our goal is to create an open and welcoming space for discovery and research, to inspire conversation and curiosity for the numerous ways we are all connected through movement and the constantly evolving legacy of American Jazz Dance.

CLASS WITH ANGEL & RAMITA

We feel it is necessary to approach this work from its cultural roots, and to offer space and opportunity for dancers to expand their knowledge through experience. In addition to the Cole Technique, we offer classes with Angel Kaba, our African Choreographer, and Ramita Ravi, our Bharatanatyam Choreographer, who bring an invaluable level of truth and integrity to the work.

Classes with Angel and Ramita provide the unique opportunity for dancers to explore the foundational principals that feed into Jazz dance, and to create deeper mindfulness, connection, and joy within their own artistry. The principles handled in these spaces translate into every aspect of the Cole idiom, making them imperative to the work. This art form is rooted in humanity and culture, and it is only with exposure to these styles and techniques we can hope to build a full and authentic relationship with Jazz.

These classes are rich with community, passion and self-discovery. It is any Jazz artists' duty to understand the full spectrum of this art form, and proper training should be all encompassing. Come immerse yourself in these vibrant cultures, and simultaneously bring cohesion and resonance to your craft!
